L'île rouge en correspondances

A photobook that made it possible to build a school in Ambodimanga, a fishing village in Madagascar.

A book for a school

L'île rouge en correspondances is a photographic novel about Madagascar: it is meant to be read as well as looked at. Eight photographers spent several years building visual correspondences, away from the usual tourist and news pictures.

The book paid for the school in Ambodimanga, a fishing village on the Pangalanes canal. It was built and opened in October 2024. About 80 children now attend it. Sales still fund the school.

“These people have nothing, yet they have everything. We have everything, and so little…”

Ambodimanga

Eighty children aged 6 to 15 had never been to school. One classroom, two groups (morning and afternoon), one teacher — or two part-time. A villager gave the land. His son, an architect, drew the plans, costed the work, bought the materials and followed the building. The village put up the fence and created an association of the same name, so that it would own the school.

The school was finished and opened in October 2024. The children attend it now: about 80 are enrolled.
